NHS Education for Scotland

A skilled and sustainable workforce for a healthier Scotland

District nursing (DN)

We are commissioning the design and delivery of an education programme to prepare nurses to work flexibly in roles within the adult integrated community nursing team. This team includes district nursing (DN), general practice nursing (GPN) and care home nursing roles.

Funding for district nursing

An education needs analysis (ENA) completed by NHS Boards in July 2019 and updated in July 2020 informs the educational requirements for DN teams.

NHS Boards can request funding to support the following education:

  • PG diploma district nursing
  • V300 prescribing module and advanced clinical assessment module, to prepare current Band 6 DNs for the refocused role

NHS Boards are also nominating Band 5 nurses for the funded graduate diploma in integrated community nursing, to prepare nurses to work in adult community nursing teams in Scotland (see programme information).

District nurse CPD learning

NES has developed a CPD learning resource to support existing career level 6 DNs to prepare for the refocused role. Sign-in or register on Turas to access the resource.

Users who already have Turas NMAHP Professional Portfolio should use the same username and password. Log in first then search for the DN CPD resource.
