Trauma and adversity is common in Scotland and people who have experienced multiple traumas are often over-represented in health and social care services. Although many people show remarkable resilience and recover from their experiences, evidence demonstrates that people who experience trauma are at higher risk of experiencing negative outcomes at all stages of their lives, including physical and mental health, education, justice, and employment.

Preventing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma and supporting the recovery of those affected has been a priority for the Scottish Government for several years and NES Psychology are a lead partner delivering this through the National Trauma Transformation Programme (NTTP).

The Trauma Responsive Social Work Services (TRSWS) programme, part of the National Trauma Transformation Programme (NTTP) in NES Psychology has recently published its evaluation from the 2023 pilot training on trauma-skilled practice for newly qualified and early career social workers (NQSWs).

Feedback from over 200 NQSWs who received Transforming Connections training from the TRSWS team was overwhelmingly positive. This reinforced the importance of supporting the newly qualified and early career social work workforce in responding to the needs of people affected by trauma, as well as recognising and mitigating the issues and challenges associated with working with it in relation to staff wellbeing and recruitment and retention. We are very encouraged to see the high level of uptake and impact that this training package has had to date, and more detail can be found in the evaluation report.

TRSWS are now able to offer this learning package again, building on learning from the pilot project. This offer is an integral part of the Trauma Responsive Social Work Services Programme and provides an interim measure of support for Newly Qualified Social Workers’ (NQSWs) learning while this learning is embedded into the new supported year.
