Replacement switching infrastructure procurement

Analysis of replacement requirements, specifications and procurement exercise completed with delivery of switches to NES offices in March. Since than a standard configuration template has been developed and replacement switch stacks installed in Inverness, Westport and 2CQ with the roll-out on going. Providing increased resilience to our edge switching infrastructure.

Increase SWAN RAS token provision

Although NES had a modest number of remote access tokens to access the SWAN network via a secure client on devices, the awareness of the global pandemic spreading allowed us to engage via the SOLG to identify critical users ensure we were able to order and receive the increased capacity to support up to 250 users. Now increased again up to approximately 300.

The scale of the pandemic becomes clear. The Communications team begins regular email, intranet, Executive Team video and webinar updates for NES. Feedback and hits on the materials show that they rapidly become an established and valued tool for staff information and engagement.

National O365 Teams provisioning (200,000 accounts)

Requirement on the weekend of the national lockdown commencing, an export was supplied of every user within the nhs.net mail system aligned to a Scottish NHS board, then each one had a cloud identity created to make use of the Teams functionality of Microsoft 365 platform to support remote working and collaboration.

Covid Workforce Status

The Scottish Government asks NES Digital to develop a solution that allows colleagues across NHS Scotland to provide their current availability to work status in light of the COVID pandemic. To enable better workforce planning. It is rolled out across NES first.

Through our early procurement of devices to avoid the end of year annual national run on equipment, NES were able to support other NHS and public sector partners by issuing either new equipment or older equipment to assist where critical processes under pressure.

Core Services have been critical in this fast moving and ever changing year. From urgent contract extensions in April to delivering more than 60 further Business Cases for Recruitment over the last 9 months to ensure teams were properly staffed. On top of this we have managed the delivery of the 2021-22 Operational Plan and have invested further into Power Platform Technologies that streamline processes within Digital and other NES directorates.

COVID-19 and other resources are developed and added to Learn

The Communications and Learn teams become heavily involved from this point onwards in designing resources, sites and learning programmes as educators rapidly increased their online content including many COVID-19 related sites. Use of Learn rose significantly. As the use of video went mainstream, the Communications team expanded its video-editing training for staff and the eLearning team was equally busy supporting the building of dozens of modules. This work continued through the rest of the year.

The Knowledge Network (TKN)

In Knowledge Services evidence relating to COVID-19 was collated and maintained and the digital library became the focus as physical libraries were closed. For NES staff Alan Gillies produced many evidence summaries to support educators. The Outreach team moved all training online and hosted successful webinars on digital inclusion and health literacy for remote consultations.

TURAS Clinical Application

TURAS Clinical Application

As part of the Scotland response to the global coronavirus, an SBAR-style COVID-19 assessment app has been developed to be used in a community assessment centre, Emergency Department, Specialist Assessment and Treatment Area and Ward context to improve situational awareness, decision making, safety and handover. The app provides a digital SBAR form designed specifically for COVID-19 assessments, creates a summary PDF of the patient assessment and sends the summary to the patient record.

Covid Accelerated Recruitment Portal (CARP)

Scottish Government commission NES Digital to rapidly develop a solution to recruit people to bolster the Health and Social care workforce during the pandemic. This includes student nurses, final year medical students and retired healthcare professionals wishing to return to service and other supporting roles. This is a massive undertaking, involving coordination with all NHS Boards, SSSC, Professional regulatory bodies, payroll, finance, HR, Legal and IG. With the closure of face-to-face events, the NES Events team are redeployed to work on the Portal.

First official workforce statistics for NES

This week, the recently-established NES Data Group released its first workforce publications as an accredited provider of Official Statistics. The move follows a transfer of responsibilities from ISD to NES and is a milestone in terms of NES becoming the 'people' organisation for NHS Scotland.

National O365 implementation/ assisting board by board identity synchronisations

As every board in NHS Scotland migrate off the nhs.net mail system into O365, there has been a requirement for each to synchronise all of their local AD identities into Azure AD. With the knowledge and skills of our own AAD experience NES Digital Operations were a critical to the planning, co-ordination and implementation of this critical work.

Delivered the Family Nurse Partnership for NHS England. This took Scotland's FNP system and modified it for use in England providing opportunities for easier and more consistent data sharing as well as reducing cost of providing the technology to both.

Turas Feedback

This new product and platform level service supports the creation of 360 feedback questionnaires. Providing the requester with a report allowing them to see how colleagues rate them against different criteria and how this aligns with how the requester rates themselves. Non executive directors are the first to use this as part of their appraisal process.

Turas Vaccination Management App

Turas Vaccination Management App

This is a web-based tool that enables front line Health & Social Care staff to capture and create real-time patient vaccination records. Through extensive collaboration between NHS Education for Scotland, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS National Services Scotland and Public Health Scotland the tool is now live and has recorded tens of thousands of vaccinations already.
