Advanced practice

The pillars of professional practice in healthcare consist of:

Multi-profession resources that align to the pillars of practice are available on the TURAS Learn advanced practice toolkit. The toolkit represents the similarities in advanced practice across professions. It contains excellent resources on leadership, education and research which are relevant for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, as well as contextualising advanced practice for supervisors and line managers.

For pharmacists, the level of complexity, autonomy, and scope of practice within these pillars at advanced practice level are defined within the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) core advanced practice curriculum. The RPS further split the clinical pillar into 2 domains-

  1. person-centred care and collaboration
  2. professional practice.

Pharmacy focussed resources are available on TURAS Learn core advanced curriculum pages.

NES provide courses, webinars, and resources to support development of practice towards an advanced level.

Pharmacist advanced practice

TURAS Learn core advanced curriculum pages host resources and signpost to external resources to assist pharmacists when working towards Royal Pharmaceutical Society core advanced pharmacist credentialing. They are also appropriate for supervisors of pharmacists working towards advanced practice to understand expectations of advanced practice standards. Multi-professional pillars of practice resources relevant to pharmacy are also hosted on TURAS Learn advanced practice toolkit.

Introductory webinars and peer support sessions are regularly held for those collating advanced practice portfolio evidence. These can be booked on TURAS Learn courses.

NES currently has programme leads to support health boards establish local advanced practice support networks. If you are interested in finding out more contact pharmacy@nes.scot.nhs.uk.
