Updated Safe Management of Care Equipment module
Updated Safe Management of Care Equipment module
NES's Safe management of care equipment Turas Learn module has been reviewed and updated to support the ongoing development of Scotland’s health and social care workforce.
Safe equipment management is an essential component of delivering high‑quality, safe care. Across all care settings – including hospitals, community services, care homes, and social care environments – staff interact daily with a wide variety of equipment. When this equipment is not cleaned, decontaminated, maintained, or stored correctly, it can contribute to the transmission of infection.
The updated module emphasises the critical role that equipment management plays in protecting people who use services, as well as visitors and staff, highlighting the responsibilities shared across the workforce to maintain safe environments.
Key enhancements
Module revisions ensure that health and social care staff continue to be supported with up‑to‑date, accessible, and nationally consistent Infection Control Prevention (IPC) education – ultimately helping deliver safer care for everyone. Key enhancements include:
- practical examples and case-based scenarios helping staff apply principles to their everyday work, reinforcing the importance of taking a proactive, person centred approach to equipment safety
- guidance on routine cleaning, decontamination processes, single‑use and reusable equipment, safe handling, and recognising when equipment requires repair or withdrawal from use
- ensuring learners understand the evidence and rationale that support safe practice
- transition of the module onto the Rise authoring tool, enabling a modern, accessible, and engaging learning experience
- optimisation for completion across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, enabling greater flexibility for learners and supporting the realities of busy health and care environments
- the design strengthening learner engagement, supporting a variety of learning styles, making the module suitable for staff in diverse roles and settings
- strengthening alignment of content with the NIPCM Standard Infection Control Precautions (SICPs), ensuring clarity and consistency with national standards
- providing essential knowledge for all staff, reinforcing a consistent, evidence‑based approach to IPC
A confident, informed workforce
Content remains aligned with the latest guidance from the National Infection Prevention and Control Manual (NIPCM) and Care Home Infection Prevention and Control Manual (CH IPCM) and reflects current best practice in safe equipment management. As part of the SIPCEP Foundation Layer, the module supports staff to build strong foundational IPC knowledge before progressing to more advanced learning opportunities.
