Scotland scores highly for medical training
A GMC UK wide survey on medical training published today shows that Scotland continues to have the highest score for overall satisfaction across the UK.
The national training survey is the largest annual survey of doctors in the UK and is the largest insight into medical education and training. Overall in the UK, 83% of doctors in training said they rated the quality of their training as good or very good, and 86% were positive about their clinical supervision.
Key findings for Scotland include:
- Scotland is number one in overall satisfaction rankings in the 4 nations
- out of 18 deaneries, NES is ranked 5th for overall satisfaction (7th last year)
- NES has 33 programmes ranked number 1 in the UK for overall satisfaction (31 last year)
- NES has increased the number of sites on the high performers list (top 2%) across the UK based on post to 30 this year
NES Executive Medical Director Professor Emma Watson said:
“NES continues to be extremely proud of our training for doctors and these results demonstrate the collaboration and hard work involved in the design and delivery of our programmes.
"Being number one in overall satisfaction across the UK isn't just a statistic—it's a testament to our commitment to excellence in medical education and a beacon for all prospective medical professionals. Our focus on creating a nurturing and challenging educational environment is key to not just training doctors, but keeping them here in Scotland where they continue to contribute to our communities’ health.
"Of course, we know that there’s more we can do to drive improvements in training environments. Whilst noting the satisfaction of training programmes across the UK, the survey also highlights important issues for doctors in training and their trainers.
"Our work and training environments should benefit not only our workforce, but also ultimately the people who use our services. We are working closely with partners to address any areas of concern raised in the survey and we will continue to listen to feedback to ensure that Scotland is one of the best places to train and work as a doctor.”
