NHS Scotland Academy team shortlisted for top award
The NHS Scotland Academy Biomedical Science Training Programme stakeholder group has been recognised in the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Awards 2025.
The team have been shortlisted in the ‘Training and Development’ category, highlighting their dedication to developing and delivering this vital programme.
Launched in October 2024, the programme is Scotland's first national (non-applied) Biomedical Scientist training initiative, endorsed by the IBMS.
It supports biomedical science graduates from non-applied IBMS-accredited degree programmes in completing the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio (RTP).
Many graduates in Scotland complete IBMS accredited biomedical science degrees that are non-applied, this means graduates are unable to complete the Registration Training Portfolios required to become qualified Biomedical Scientists.
This programme offers a new training pathway, in partnership with NHS Scotland’s IBMS-approved laboratories, to provide trainees with a positive, quality-assured learning experience.
With this training, graduates are able to demonstrate the necessary skills, and competence to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as Biomedical Scientists.
Over the years there has been a significant increase in demand for Biomedical Scientists across Scotland, with an ageing population and increased need for diagnostic and lab testing, this programme will play a significant role in supporting patients and Health Boards across Scotland.
The NHS Scotland Academy a partnership between NHS Education for Scotland and NHS Golden Jubilee – is now on its second cohort of the programme and recent graduates are working in laboratories across NHS Scotland.
Director of NHS Scotland Academy, Learning and Innovation, Professor Kevin Kelman said:
"Being shortlisted for the IBMS Awards 2025 is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the Biomedical Science Registration Training Portfolio Programme.
“This initiative is vital in developing a skilled workforce in line with the Scottish Government’s long-term NHS workforce planning strategy so we are ready to meet the evolving needs of NHS Scotland."
The IBMS Awards are among the most prestigious accolades in the biomedical science profession, recognising individuals, teams, and organisations delivering outstanding work.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 4 July 2025 at The Brewery in London.
