A recent webinar highlighted practical ways to engage with people who have learning disabilities and autistic people in health and social care settings.

Hosted by the Learning Disability Team at NES, the webinar involved key partners from the Learning Disability Drivers group (experts by experience) as well as the Scottish Government and the Scottish Assembly.

It showcased a series of practical resources co-designed by the Drivers group, which support equal access to services, choice and understanding. A new NES-created animation focusing on human rights for people with learning disabilities was also unveiled.

Catherine Totten from Scottish Ambulance Service and Nicola Braid from NHS 24 highlighted how their colleagues had used the resources and provided hints and tips, alongside a wider Q&A.

Attendees came from across Scotland and from a wide range of professional groups. Feedback included:

  • “Really engaging webinar which was very thought provoking in terms of service delivery”
  • “Thoroughly enjoyed the webinar, very informative and great hearing from the Drivers’ personal perspectives”
  • “The Drivers were behind every step of this work. For them, by them”

The facilitator, from the Scottish Assembly said:

“The Drivers were amazed that people joined from all over Scotland and are engaged with, and interested in, the resources. They would like to visit NHS 24 and SAS as they want to know more from people using the resources.”
