Psychological care training makes positive impact for infants

In 2021 the NES Paediatric Psychology workstream launched the ‘Infants in Hospital: Promoting social and emotional wellbeing in zero to three-year-olds'.

The module is part of our Training in Psychological Skills for Paediatric Healthcare (TIPS-PH) programme and is aimed at all NHS and partnership paediatric staff working with children and young people with long-term physical health conditions.

It is a half-day interactive workshop, designed to increase awareness of the social and emotional needs of infants in hospital.

The training aims to do this by increasing:

  • staff knowledge and understanding of psychosocial competencies at early developmental stages
  • recognition and understanding of distress in infants
  • skills in the strategies used to promote wellbeing in this age group
  • positive relationships with parents

To date, over 100 training places have been taken up and outcomes include:

  • significant increases in self-rated knowledge and confidence across all learning outcomes, pre-post training
  • 100% would use the skills in practice
  • 4% would recommend the training to their colleagues
  • 4% rated the training as excellent (44.7%), very good (13.2%) or good (39.5%)

Comments about the training include:

“Great variety of interaction, video, teaching tools. Easy to follow and grasp concepts and teaching”
“Really engaging, inclusive and informative”
“Very informative and reassuring we are doing some of these things already”
“Discussion time was really useful to share specific scenarios and experiences”
