“Imagine being put into a world where you can’t understand the language, you don’t know what is going on and you’ve got no way of understanding.  It’s like being put in a foreign country and they all speak a different language.” Jason Leitch, National Clinical Director, Scottish Government Health and Care Directorate

Jason also adds that too often we take health literacy for granted. The Covid-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated how important it is that health messages are clearly communicated and understood.

We have produced, in partnership with Health Education England, an eLearning resource for health and social care staff. Once completed staff will understand the role health literacy plays in making sure everyone has enough knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to use health information, to be active partners in their care, and to navigate health and social care systems.

Techniques in the resource include:

  • TeachBack
  • Chunk and check
  • Using pictures
  • Simple language

Each learner can complete an Action Plan of how they intend to use the techniques in their practice which can be saved and used as evidence of learning in their Appraisal or professional portfolio.

Note: The eLearning is hosted on Turas.  You will need a Turas account to view and access the module. If you don’t have a Turas account, you can register here.
