New programme of work for NMAHP

Our Public Health workstream in our NMAHP Directorate welcomes a new team, Healthcare Built Environment (HBE).

The HBE team will work with NHS Scotland Assure and other key stakeholders to:

  • promote a culture of life-long learning, continuous improvement and improved patient safety
  • identify education and training needs across the specialist HBE workforce
  • agree, prioritise and develop learning resources and opportunities
  • monitor, evaluate and revise educational outputs

NHS Scotland Assure, part of NHS National Services Scotland (NSS), is a national centre for reducing risks in the healthcare built environment and ensuring healthcare facilities are:

  • safe
  • fit for purpose
  • cost effective
  • capable of delivering sustainable services over the long term

The HBE team will support this work by progressing a cohesive and integrated approach to specialist workforce education development for this diverse multi-agency and multi professional staff group including clinical, estates and facilities staff.

The Team will  focus on the development of three main areas:

  1. Learning and Development Strategy

An accessible version of The National Learning and Development Strategy is hosted on the NHS Scotland Assure workforce planning and development webpage.

  1. Knowledge & Skills Framework for the HBE

A Knowledge and Skills Framework for the Healthcare Built Environment is currently under development, in collaboration with NHS Scotland Assure. A first draft of the framework has been circulated to colleagues in NHS boards and external partners for comment. A second draft of the strategy, based on feedback from the initial consultation, will follow shortly.

     3. Leadership Development

In response to recent hospital incidents, NES, in conjunction with NHS Scotland Assure, will support the development and enhancement of education and training for Executive and Non-Executive board members in NHS Scotland. The sessions will raise awareness of their duties and responsibilities in the construction and ongoing management of the healthcare infrastructure.

The first Healthcare Built Environment Senior Leadership development session event will take place on 10 December 2021, with further sessions planned for 2022.

The HBE Team is composed of:

  • Kate Harley, Interim Head of Programme
  • Teresa McGougan, Principal Educator
  • Angela King, Senior Educator
  • Ann McQuiston, Specialist Lead
