NES Psychology: Motivational Interviewing in physical health settings

Motivational Interviewing (MI) in Physical Health settings is an evidence-based intervention that helps to support health behaviour change. MI uses distinct techniques to mobilise the individual's intrinsic goals and values and to understand and resolve ambivalence about change (Physiopedia.com).

Astley Ainslie Psychological Skills and Education Training (AsSET) upskills professionals working in physical health disciplines to:

  • improve their communication skills
  • deliver more patient centred care
  • help people change behaviours to self-manage their long-term condition more effectively

The aim is to train staff to use more psychological skills in their job role.

NES Psychology has recently trained 44 occupational therapists, over six training cohorts, in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, on MI in Physical Health settings.

The training was hosted as part of a pilot project to trial a bitesize version of one of the AsSET introductory courses. A further 27 staff are enrolled to attend two future training cohorts.

Training so far has been well received and discussions are ongoing about how to support staff further in their learning journey.
