Mental Health Improvement and Suicide Prevention
Since 2019, NES and Public Health Scotland have worked in partnership to create a suite of ‘Ask, Tell, Respond’ suicide prevention education resources and provide various workforce development opportunities.
The Mental Health Improvement and Suicide Prevention Knowledge and Skills Framework was developed to support people working across:
- health
- social care
- voluntary
- public services
The framework will identify learning needs across six domains in four levels of practice – Informed, Skilled, Enhanced and Specialist.
It is designed to be used based on roles and context, rather than seniority by:
- individuals
- teams
- managers/supervisors
- organisations
- education/training providers
Feedback has shown the framework is a valuable tool for staff development, with increasing usage each year.
To gain further insights into its effectiveness, an independent evaluation was commissioned in 2023. The evaluation told us:
In response to the evaluation’s recommendations, several actions have been taken:
- a page for the framework on our Mental Health Improvement and Suicide Prevention Turas site
- an animation explaining how to use the framework and the levels of practice
- case studies showcasing how individuals and teams have used the framework for personal and team learning.
We value the feedback and the contribution to the evaluation that has supported the developments to date.
All resources are available on the Mental health improvement, and prevention of self-harm and suicide Turas learning site.
