Making Delegation Safe and Effective

Making Delegation Safe and Effective

Making Delegation Safe and Effective

Delegation takes place daily;  therefore it’s important that every delegation is safe and effective.

The new “Making Delegation Safe and Effective” learning resource can support decision making in relation to delegating and accepting delegated tasks.

The resource draws on information from the Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council (NIPEC), Deciding to Delegate (NIPEC, 2019) and the All-Wales Guidelines for Delegation (HEIW, 2020) resources.

It brings together guidance from professional bodies, the law and best practice to help you access information and advice on making informed decisions about delegating tasks and accepting tasks delegated to you.

Who is the resource for?

It has been developed for nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and healthcare support workers working in health or care settings across Scotland.

What does the resource cover?

The resource promotes appropriate delegation for all staff, who delegate or who are delegated to and covers:

  • the elements of safe delegation using the 5Rs process
  • advice and guidance from professional bodies
  • examples of delegation in practice highlighted through scenarios and video case studies

How can the resource be used to support your learning and development?

This resource can be used in different ways by:

  • working through the whole resource or ‘dipping in’ to a specific section which meets the learners needs
  • working through the resource with a colleague or member of your team to get maximum benefit from the ‘pause for thought’ exercises
  • using this resource with staff members as part of continuing professional development (CPD) or as a tool to support a team, if you are a team leader or clinical manager
  • incorporated into local training sessions utilising scenario examples, case study videos, pause for thought exercises and multiple-choice activity

How do I access the resource?

Access the Making Delegation Safe and Effective” learning resource  You can access the recording from the launch event, the presentation and Q&A summary on Turas Learn
