Leveraging Team Based Leadership to Achieve Health and Social Care Integration

Leslie Curry is a professor of Health Policy and Management at the Yale School of Public Health, a lecturer at Yale College, and core faculty at the at the Yale Global Health Leadership Initiative. Her research focuses on organisational culture and performance and diverse healthcare settings globally.

The session covered the following topics:

  • health and social care in the US: what is the current state and how did we get there
  • health and social care integration: the role of team-based leadership
  • champions advancing racial equity in Sepsis: an example

Professor Curry explained the state of health and care is quite poor, despite the US spending $4.2 trillion on the sector in 2023. She went on to explain what is poor about the service and the reasons that have caused this state.

She then described what a good sector would look like and how a team-based leadership approach would help the US make improvements. And how this might translate into other environments, for example the UK.

Professor Curry said:

“(In the) US healthcare system, like Scotland, we face complex challenges many of the same that you do... that we really believe can be solved using principles of grand strategy and team-based leadership.
“Team based leadership interventions are effective at addressing complex challenges.”

After the presentation Prof Curry answered questions from participants.
