A is for Accelerate and Adoption: NES workforce and education and digital partners in Accelerated National Innovation Adoption (ANIA)

Accelerated National Innovation Adoption (ANIA) is a collaborative partnership working to implement innovation at scale to improve service responsiveness and service user outcomes.

It is hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Delivery (CfSD) which forms part of the innovation pipeline led by the Chief Scientist Office (CSO). NES is a key partner in this activity influencing workforce and education and providing critical digital expertise, co-ordination and platform infrastructure.

The key ANIA leads present the context, rationale and purpose behind the partnership and highlight:

  • the importance of innovative activity and innovation
  • innovation’s potential to increase our effectiveness and efficiency from both a people and performance perspective
  • how working in partnership amplifies this potential

In its 2023 Programme for Government, Scottish Government stated:

“We will utilise scientific and technological innovation to provide new diagnostic tools, improve patient flow and create new therapeutic options through our accelerated national innovation adoption pathway.”

The session highlights the significance of investment in research and innovation to address some of the pressures and challenges within the health system in Scotland, supporting NHS Scotland key priorities, reducing disease burdens, improving patient outcomes and efficiency.

It looks at the governance around ANIA, the 5 stages of the pathway, two programmes currently being implemented and plans for the next 12 months. It also highlights the need for the right technology and digital architecture to support the ANIA pathway stages and implementation at scale across the territorial health boards in Scotland.

Additionally, the session explains the workforce and education role of NES – enabling and ensuring the right skills and the right workforce are in place so that adoption is effective and efficient.

This includes:

  • stakeholder engagement and co-production
  • considering the workforce skills and capabilities required
  • defining the potential for change and increased efficiency with existing workforce models in boards
  • scoping new workforce models
