NHS Education for Scotland Publishes New Equality Outcomes


NHS Education for Scotland (NES) today set out a four-year plan to promote equality both in the workforce and in the education and training we deliver.

The Equality Outcomes & Mainstreaming Report 2017 identifies a number of priority focus areas for the next four years. These include supporting efforts to reduce health inequalities, reducing the educational attainment gap for International and minority ethnic graduates in medical education, making learning more inclusive, and enhancing access to employment and career development, including providing support to refugee doctors living in Scotland.

NES Chief Executive Caroline Lamb said: “Setting concrete goals will help us focus on what we need to do to make sure our work is accessible and inclusive, and to ensure that we are improving this important aspect of educational quality.”
The report, produced as a statutory obligation under the Equality Act (2010), also summarises NES’ progress towards delivering its previous set of equality outcomes, as well as the advances the organisation has made incorporating equality and diversity into its everyday working culture.

Over the past four years, NES’ work in this area has included working with partners to improve career development opportunities for all NHSScotland staff, identifying barriers to learning and development, and championing inclusive approaches to learning in the development of all our education and training.

The report highlights specific achievements that exemplify NES’ commitment to improving equality, including work with the General Medical Council (GMC) on addressing differential attainment of international and black and minority graduates in the UK, supporting the Bridges Programme to help refugee doctors develop the skills they need to practice in Scotland, and efforts to improve online accessibility and access as part of NES’ ongoing digital transformation.
