Designing for the future

Leading by Design – 13 February 2019, V&A Dundee

A group of leading health and social care, education and prison service staff are coming together at the V&A Dundee to explore how design principles can help us plan public services to meet our needs of tomorrow. 

This innovative event is going to use the unique setting and resources of the V&A Dundee to focus on how we can lead change by design. Through practical workshops and interactive sessions, participants will learn how design can be used to transform the public sector experience, both for the public and staff. 

By bringing together NHS Education for Scotland (NES) leadership development and quality improvement programmes the goal is to foster a culture of creativity and innovation in healthcare and public services. 

Dr Kate Arrow and Thomas Lamont; organisers of the event and NES Scottish Clinical Leadership Fellows said:

“To meet the future needs of our public services will require a culture of creativity and innovation. Co-design with members of public is central to the design of these services. We’re both currently completing a clinical leadership development programme with NES and it was through these roles that we became aware of design thinking. 

“We were inspired by local ENT Surgeon Rodney Mountain’s work as a design champion. We are delighted that Rod, along with Hazel White and Mike Press of The Open Change Agency can share their expertise with public sector workers in order to design and ‘future-proof’ services.” 

Rodney Mountain, Consultant ENT Surgeon, NHS Tayside, said:

“Quality improvement and Patient safety are well established activities in the Scottish NHS. However, we often fail to include our patients and other care workers in these activities. Design stimulates creativity and brings everyone to the table as equal partners, learning from each other, sharing ideas and trying out new ways to improve the care experience.” 

Hazel White, Director of Open Change, added:

“We believe public sector bodies can learn from each other. That is why it is so important to create a network of improvement leaders who understand and can help spread change and maximise resource to meet demand.”

Scottish Clinical Leadership Fellows are a cadre of doctors and dentists that are committed to living and working in Scotland and have enhanced capability to offer leadership in their workplace and potentially at national and international levels. It is a year-long programme that takes doctors or dentists in training out of a clinical environment to focus on developing themselves as potential health leaders of the future.
  3. Rodney Mountain is a Consultant ENT Surgeon in NHS Tayside and is one of the founders of "Healthcare - Designed in Dundee". He strongly believes in the "Art" of medicine and added value of a "Design" led approach to health and social care, created through direct patient and community engagement and the co-design of healthcare products and services.
  4. Open Change is an innovation agency which supports organisations to put the people who use and deliver services at the centre of re-imagining service delivery.
