Launched of refreshed Flying Start


Whether they work in the NHS or other health and social care setting, newly qualified nurses, midwives and allied health professionals across Scotland will be supported with their learning and professional development needs with the launch of the newly refreshed Flying Start NHS programme.  

Flying Start NHS supports the transition from pre-registration student to qualified, confident and capable health professional.  Newly qualified nurses, midwives and allied health professional working in any sector or setting can access the programme.  

NES has redesigned the national development programme to support the professional development needs of practitioners.  The programme content reflects how the delivery of health and social care is changing – with a focus on the work environment.  It is more practical, work-based and can be tailored to individual needs.  

Key features of the refreshed programme include: 

  • Simplified content – 4 learning units,organised around the Pillars of Practice 

  • Learner directed – with a focus on what is most beneficial to learn in the workplace 

  • New guidance – for new practitioners, managers and Flying Start Facilitators 

  • Up to 3 months to register – to allow the practitioner time to settle into their new role
