Workforce Development

Apprenticeships in NHSScotland

Apprenticeships be they Foundation, Modern or Graduate provide an increasingly important element in the workforce development landscape in NHSScotland.

The range of Apprenticeship Frameworks now available in Scotland means that they are suitable for supporting the learning of new recruits in a wide range of service areas. From pharmacy technicians to electricians, from dental nurses to administrative assistants, and from laboratory technicians to designers - these are just a few of the roles which NHS Apprentices are learning to fill. They all have one thing in common - they are setting out on a new career supported by a major national training programme.

NES has worked with Skills Development Scotland and a number of NHS Boards to produce two guides on Apprenticeships, each designed to help NHSScotland make the most of them:

Working to Learn & Learning to Work:  a guide to Apprenticeships for NHSScotland.

Moving Forward With Modern Apprenticeships:
* a guide to the different steps needed to set up and run an effective MA Programme
* access to a wide range of resources to support the development stages of your new programme
* case studies showing how MA Programmes work in a number of NHSScotland Boards

Timeline for Workforce Planning: a time frame to support collaborative working with MA providers and to facilitate NHS workforce planning for MAs. This timeline should be use in conjunction with Moving Forward with Modern Apprenticeships.

Working to Learn & Learning to Work and Moving Forward With Modern Apprenticeships are both available as interactive pdfs and in hard copy. For hard copies of the guides and the timeline, please contact asktheteam@nes.scot.nhs.uk

Developing the Young Workforce and Youth Employment Activities in NHSScotland provides a national overview of current activities to support youth engagement in each NHSScotland Board.
