PAL Network

The Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Network was launched in 2015 and is an interesting way to learn, and a great way to get feedback and support from your colleagues. From its inception, there are now over 350 Optometrists involved. It is based on the ethos that peer review works best if the same group of people meet regularly to discuss cases and learn from each other’s experience.

The number of groups in the PAL Network is continually growing and we are delighted that there are now 35 groups set up in several regions throughout Scotland: Aberdeen, Ayr, Cumbernauld, Dundee, Kirkcaldy, Edinburgh, Elgin, Glasgow, Inverness, Lanarkshire and Stirling all have at least one active PAL group that meets on a regular basis.

While it is not a requirement for Dispensing Opticians to undertake peer review yet, it is still an attractive mode of learning, and 2018 sees the Network widening to include Dispensing Opticians, with the creation of the first DO specific PAL group in Glasgow. We anticipate a strong interest in these groups and look forward to watching their expansion across Scotland. We are also developing material to support PAL for Practices, where the whole team can learn together.

But, don’t just take our word for it… here are some testimonials from the recent PAL meeting held in Dundee:

“A relaxed evening where everyone felt comfortable to contribute to the discussion”

“Brilliant evening of open and honest discussion with peers in a relaxed environment. Looking forward to the next one”

“Very worthwhile and useful to hear different viewpoints - the experienced, the newly qualified and the IP and non IP Optometrist”
