Advanced Nursing Practice

Advanced Practice Toolkit

The toolkit supports ongoing developments to enhance understanding of this dynamic role across the four Pillars of clinical practice, research, education and leadership.

Advanced Nursing Practice 2017-2021

The Scottish Government is continuing to support the national approach to advanced practice, a key strand of the Transforming Roles programme. This includes a commitment within “A Plan for Scotland: the Government's Programme for Scotland 2016-17” to train 500 additional Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) by 2021.

The Chief Nursing Officer’s Directorate has agreed to fund ANP postgraduate diploma programme fees for nurses who are additional to NHS Board/employers’ plans for ANP development who will commence modules from 1st April 2019 and complete their preparation by September 2021. NHS Education for Scotland (NES) has been commissioned to manage the process on behalf.

ANPs will play a crucial role in taking forward the Scottish Government’s aims to transform Primary Care and shifting the balance of care from acute settings to the community. It is therefore anticipated that many of these posts will be developed in community and primary care settings including the care sector.

University course information for Advanced Practice is available on University websites

1. Educational Needs Analysis

An Educational Needs Analysis (ENA) is completed annually to help identify the ongoing education needs of staff to enable ANP service requirements to be met. It also enables NHS Education for Scotland to understand the likely demand for ANP education during each funding period.

NHS Boards, GP Practices, Care Homes and Hospices have been invited to complete an ENA to identify the education needs of additional ANP posts. The closing date for ENA responses is 2nd July 2019.
