NHS Education for Scotland

A skilled and sustainable workforce for a healthier Scotland

Paediatric psychology (TIPS-PH)

Paediatric psychology (TIPS-PH)

The Training in Psychological Skills - Paediatric Healthcare (TIPS-PH) programme aims to increase psychological capability and capacity among all paediatric health and social care staff working with children and young people with long term physical health conditions.

Children and young people with long-term physical health conditions are at increased risk of experiencing psychological distress compared to their healthy peers.  The TIPS-PH programme of training acknowledges that all staff contribute to psychosocial care for children and young people and aims to enhance competency and confidence in psychological skills within all disciplines and levels of expertise. By training the paediatric workforce in skills to promote coping, adjustment and the management of symptoms and treatments, we can improve quality of life and health outcomes for children, young people and families.  Training is accessible to all paediatric health and social care staff.

Current training portfolio

The programme includes core and advanced skills-based workshops, bitesize talks and e-learning and online resources for paediatric and health and social care staff. Workshops are delivered nationally by NES and as local events delivered by a network of local paediatric psychologists across Scotland, in their local Health Board areas. Putting it Into Practice Sessions (PIPS) are also offered following training, to consolidate skills and reflect on experiences of how skills have been applied in practice.

Please see our programme overview [PDF] for a full list of the modules we offer.

Please contact psychology@nes.scot.nhs.uk for further information about any of our modules or for details of any national training events.

Alternatively, please contact your local paediatric psychology service for details of upcoming local training.
