The Knowledge Network is improving!
From 27th March 2017 The Knowledge Network will move into a new phase of development and look slightly different. When you search for journals, books and articles you will use the new Library Search. To read about the background to this development click here.
Knowledge Services at NHS Education for Scotland and the NHSS library and knowledge services staff have been working together to improve how you find NHS Scotland’s national collection of electronic resources (e-journals, articles and e-books) and the local NHS library collections (primarily print books). Currently you would search The Knowledge Network for electronic resources and look for local resources using the Scottish Health Libraries Catalogue (SHELcat) online catalogue and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde GGCOLIB library catalogue.
This is an image of the redesigned Knowledge Network after 27th March.
When you type a word or phrase into the Library Search box, a new window will open to display the results of your search.
Note: if you use Internet Explorer 10 or earlier you will use the link to an alternative version of the search service that supports older browsers, your results will be the same it will just look a little different. See the note below.
You can use the filters on the left to narrow your results. If you want to view items held in your local NHS library, select the library name on the left menu.
You are advised to sign in with your NHS Scotland OpenAthens username to see resources available to you and to manage items you have borrowed from a library.
You can try the new search
- If you have Internet Explorer 11, Chrome or Firefox from here
- If you use Internet Explorer 10 or earlier, Safari use this link.
Please note you will NOT be able to sign in to the service until it is live on 27th March. As it is still in development there may be times it is unavailable.
Why are there 2 versions?
The provider ExLibris has produced a new version of the interface with features we would like you to benefit from but unfortunately this new version is not accessible from older browsers.
What are you searching?
The new Knowledge Network Library Search provides access to electronic and printed journals, books and articles available to everyone in health and social services in Scotland. Some other types of resources previously included The Knowledge Network search will now be available as links from the ‘More Information Sources’ on The Knowledge Network eg Scottish Government, SIGN.
Other services will continue to be available from The Knowledge Network eg Evidence Summaries, Communities, Portals and Topics, Current Awareness.
Usernames in the new Library Search
From March 27th you will only need one username and password for both electronic and printed library resources, e.g. books, journals and databases.
The good news is that you will continue to use your NHS Scotland OpenAthens username to access the electronic resources. You will also use this username to manage your loans, request items, etc, from the NHSS Libraries. If you have a SHELcat library card you can still use it when borrowing or returning print material in libraries, but you will also be able to use your OpenAthens account.
Social services and other partners can also have access to the print collections by joining the Health Management Library.
