European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) - 18 November

The 18 November is European Antibiotic Awareness Day and falls during World Antibiotic Awareness Week.  In Scotland the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group (SAPG) leads activities to support EAAD and works closely with colleagues in Public Health England to raise awareness among health and care staff, patients and the public about the need to use antibiotics more wisely to stop antimicrobial resistance.

This year we’re supporting the Antibiotic Guardian campaign led by Public Health England (PHE).  The campaign encourages members of the public and healthcare professionals to make a pledge about how they personally will use antibiotics more prudently, and become Antibiotic Guardians.  The goal is to reach 100,000 registered Antibiotic Guardians by 31 March 2017 and we’ll be using NHSScotland versions of the Antibiotic Guardian resources to support this aim.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats facing us today.  Without effective antibiotics many routine treatments will become increasingly dangerous.  To slow resistance, we need to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics.  Help support European Antimicrobial Awareness Day (18 November) by taking the Antibiotic Guardian pledge and play your role.
