Basic Microbiology

This module covers the basic knowledge required for an understanding of the topic such as cell structure, identification of micro-organisms, epidemiology, organisms behaviour and normal flora.

Target Audience

The module is relevant for all postgraduate healthcare workers but the main target audience is registered nurses at Post Graduate level.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of the normal human flora and organism behaviours
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the cell structure and identification of micro-organisms including susceptibility testing and typing.
  • Identify the principles of epidemiology
  • Describe the chain of infection and Infection Prevention and Control.

Further information

The anticipated learning time for this tutorial is one hour.  The assessment comprises multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%.  On completion of the course you can print off a record of learning as evidence for your portfolio or training record.
