Communicating, Connecting, Caring

Principles of Good Communication

There are many different communication and relationship models or approaches...and whilst many of these describe specific skills, tasks or behaviours it is still possible to identify a number of principles which are common to them all.

The skills, knowledge, behaviours and attitudes emphasised within a particualr model or approach can be dependent on the clinical environment or professional group for which it was written. The extent to which it is relevant and applicable may depend on the nature of the interaction. However within this environment of multiple approaches and models a number of common or shared principles can be identified.  Many of these principles and associated behaviours apply to every conversation with patients and colleagues.
