Following a review of the literature and evaluation from NES demonstration sites, Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) implemented a Hub and Spoke Model (Roxburgh et al 2012) for practice learning experiences. From September 2012 as part of the newly validated undergraduate nursing programmes, this model placed approximately 450 students in a ‘Hub’ practice learning environment, as a base for the duration of the 3 year Bachelor of Nursing (BN) or 4 year Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Nursing Studies (BANS) programmes.
In order to maximise the student experience students undertake practice learning in associated areas termed ‘spokes’. This has supported students achieve professional competence by shifting the emphasis to a collaborative learning experience where the mentor and student work together in partnership to enhance learning experiences that promote safe and effective practice.
The following report describes the implementation and evaluation of the hub and spoke practice model project for all fields of nursing practice, the outcomes achieved and the conclusions reached as a result of the work undertaken.
