Jill Doherty - Trainee Clinical Scientist - NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

Practitioner Training Programme

Prior to this appointment I was a genetic technologist within the Cytogenetics department during which time I completed the Practitioner Training Programme (PTP), also funded by NES. The training was challenging but incredibly interesting and encompassed both molecular genetic and cytogenetic techniques. At that time the two disciplines were managed separately. However, at a national level there was a move to integrate the disciplines and start to develop interdisciplinary links with closely related departments since molecular techniques and knowledge were changing the way that testing could be provided.

After completing the PTP scheme I had developed technical and analytical skills across both disciplines, which was new for a technologist in the department.  I had also had worked closely and built relationships with staff with varied skills and knowledge. This knowledge proved invaluable in recent months as both disciplines have begun to streamline workflows, notably the automation of a large proportion of the workflow and development of next generation sequencing services.

As the service and the discipline are moving forward rapidly and I wanted to become involved in development and innovation, this led me to apply for the Trainee Clinical Scientist position. The PTP was the ideal platform from which to continue my development and the programmes are designed to allow progression via this pathway.

Clinical Scientist Training Programme

The appeal of the STP for me is that it incorporates cross training in other disciplines within three 12 week rotations. I will gain an overview of tests performed in Haematology, Biochemistry and Reproductive science. These disciplines all interlink in various ways with the testing that is performed in Laboratory Genetics and will give me a broader view of testing strategies for disease.

The opportunities I have been afforded through NES funding have allowed me to improve my knowledge and qualifications in Laboratory Genetics. In the future I hope to use the skills I have gained to work closely with colleagues here and in closely linked disciplines to innovate and develop testing strategies and patient pathways that are efficient and provide the best possible service for patients.
