Scottish winners at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2021
Two Scottish entries enjoyed success at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2021 which took place at a ceremony in London on 4 November.
NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde’s Clinical Research Facility won the ‘Student Placement of the Year: Hospital’ award and the University of Stirling won the ‘Nurse Education Provider of the Year’ award in the post registration category.
The Clinical Research Facility (CRF) became a Practice Learning Environment for Pre-Registration nursing students in 2016. This was a result of a collaboration with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde’s (NHSGG&C) Practice Education Facilitator/Care Home Education Facilitator (PEF/CHEF) team and Glasgow Caledonian University to meet the Quality Standards for Practice Learning. It has since gone from strength to strength - supporting students every trimester, with a team of prepared Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors and has continued to support students through the pandemic while running Covid clinical trials.
The judges concluded that 'This entry goes above and beyond to demonstrate the potential of a unique practice learning opportunity for nursing students, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and that this practice learning opportunity is innovative and at the forefront of developing the critically important skills of the future nursing workforce.'

Naomi Hickey and Deborah McGlynn, who lead Practice Education in the CRF said:
“It’s a real privilege to be recognised by this award. We have worked hard to develop our student placements. Clinical research is a slightly unknown quantity for students, so this is an honour for the whole research community.”
The MSc Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) post registration programme at the University of Stirling prepares students to build relationships with families. It also provides them with the knowledge and skills required to assess and support the needs of children and families using a person-centred approach. The award recognises outstanding institutions that offer courses to develop the leadership, management and clinical skills of qualified nurses.
Alison Hackett (centre), Programme Director of the MSc Early Years Practice (Health Visiting), collects the Student Nursing Times Award for Nurse Education Provider of the Year (Post-registration).
Alison Hackett, Programme Director of the MSc Early Years Practice (Health Visiting), said:
“I am absolutely delighted to receive this award as our team is passionate about health visiting practice and it provides recognition of the quality of our programme, excellent partnership working, and the dedication of our students past and present.”
The University of Stirling’s (UoS) nursing programmes are ranked top five in Scotland (Complete University Guide 2022) and are approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The MSc Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) has an 86% student satisfaction rating in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey 2021.
Dr Kathleen Duffy, Head of Programme, NMAHP Directorate, NES said:
“It’s a great achievement for both winners in the face of strong competition across the UK in each category. We work closely with our heath and care colleagues and our university partners to ensure all student learning experiences are the best they can be through the support of the practice education infrastructure of PEF/CHEFs.
"We’re delighted for NHSGG&C CRF and the UoS. These awards reflect the excellent quality of education available to support nursing and midwifery careers in Scotland.”
