The 2022 Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Annual Report reviews the work our Medical Directorate, along with our partners in NHS Scotland and Universities do, to ensure safe, effective care for patients, both now and in the future.

The report details our main activities and gives an update on:

  • how we manage the delivery of recruitment, training programmes, assessment and support of Scotland’s doctors in training
  • how we ensure quality, education and training standards are met
  • how we support the continuing professional development and education of non training grade doctors in Scotland’s NHS

Professor Stewart Irvine, outgoing Director of Medicine said:

“Our key task to recruit, educate and train around 6000 trainee doctors for Scotland continues unabated and we report on how this continues to be possible by drawing on the learning and experience of the last two years.
“Our function to uphold standards has been found to be working well and we report on some of the highlights in the year. We also report on our role in educating trained doctors and other key staff across NHS Scotland, sharing with you a number of ground-breaking projects and initiatives.”

Professor Irvine retired in March and Dr Emma Watson has been appointed as the next Director of Medicine, from 1 April.
